The remarkable Viano Quartet returns to the UVic stage! Fresh from the release of their acclaimed album "Voyager"—hailed as one of the most outstanding recordings of the decade—the quartet brings their signature artistry, precision, and vitality to an unforgettable afternoon of chamber music. PROGRAM Joseph Haydn: String Quartet in D Major, Op. 76, No. 5 Kian Ravaei: The Little Things Anton Webern: Langsamer Satz Dmitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 9, Op. 117 ABOUT THE ARTISTS Praised for their “virtuosity, visceral expression, and rare unity of intention” (Boston Globe), the Viano Quartet has rapidly emerged as one of the leading chamber ensembles of their generation. Winners of the 2025 Avery Fisher Career Grant and First Prize at the 13th Banff International String Quartet Competition, they have performed at major venues including Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, the Konzerthaus Berlin, Koerner Hall, and Hong Kong City Hall. From 2024–2027, they are Bowers Program Artists at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The quartet is equally devoted to classic repertoire and new music, collaborating with composers such as Caroline Shaw, Kevin Lau, and Sir Stephen Hough, with a new quartet by Reena Esmail forthcoming in 2026. Formed at the Colburn Conservatory in 2015, the Viano Quartet takes its name from the idea that four voices can blend to create a single, unified instrument—like a “viano.”
