About this organization

Founded in 1995 by coloratura soprano Nancy Hermiston, who still directs it and chairs the UBC School of Music's Voice and Opera divisions, UBC Opera is a company of about 90 student singers and a training ground for international careers. Each season brings staged productions with original sets and costumes, plus afternoon Opera Teas and the Singer Behind the Song series with visiting artists. The 2026–27 season pairs Smetana's The Bartered Bride with Puccini's Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, and collaborates with Opera West Society.
