September in Toronto: Yuja Wang, two Beethoven Sevenths and a Mozart Requiem

The end of summer can be shrouded in melancholy. And yet it is also the time of year when we get to look forward to the new season — and what a season Toronto has in store.

The TSO launches its 2026/27 season on the 24th with Yuja Wang playing Prokofiev's Third, alongside a world premiere by Linda Catlin Smith and Debussy's La mer. Tafelmusik's opener the next night pairs Louise Farrenc's Third Symphony with Beethoven's Seventh under Jakob Lehmann, and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir closes the month on the 30th with Mozart's Mass in C Minor and Requiem — two unfinished works, both of which have outlasted almost everything written around them.

The Canadian Opera Company marks twenty years in the Four Seasons Centre with a gala on the 17th, then puts La Traviata back on the mainstage the following night. If you've been meaning to try opera and want a familiar entry point, that's the one.
